Light pollution refers to the excessive or misdirected artificial light that brightens the night sky, disrupting natural darkness and affecting both the environment and human health. Common sources include streetlights, billboards, buildings, and vehicles, which contribute to phenomena like skyglow, glare, and light trespass. This form of pollution not only obscures our view of stars and celestial bodies but also interferes with the natural behaviors of nocturnal animals, such as birds, insects, and sea turtles. For humans, prolonged exposure to artificial light at night can disturb sleep patterns and suppress melatonin production, potentially leading to health issues. As urbanization expands, light pollution continues to grow—but with thoughtful lighting design and public awareness, its impact can be significantly reduced.
