Taiping, Malaysia's 'wettest' town, on brink of water rationing

TAIPING: The threat of water rationing looms over the nation's wettest town if rain does not fall here over the next few days. State public utilities, infrastructure, energy and water committee chairman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin said the two-week exercise, from April 3 to 16, would affect 27,982 residents living in two zones.

"The water level at the Headwood Taiping water treatment plant has dropped to a critical level.

"The current output is 26 million litres per day, a 26% decrease from the 35 million litres daily previously," he told reporters here in an emergency press conference Friday afternoon.

Zainol Fadzi said notices would be put up at the affected areas to inform residents should the water rationing exercise take place.

"Each zone would take turns to have water supply for a period of two days at a time," he added.
