Edwardians Unite

History of King Edward VII School, Taiping, Perak

The school began its history in July 1883 when it was established as the Central School, which was the first English school in Taiping. The original location of the school is in the area where the Nurses’ Hostel now stands. The school had modest beginnings with 13 students, but enrolment picked up fast, and a gymnasium was added to the school in 1885. In 1894, physical education was added to the school’s curriculum. By 1895, the school’s students numbered 159, with 28 of them being Malay boys. Two additional wooden sheds were built that accommodated two and three classrooms each, but this was fast becoming inadequate. In 1901, the Central School was renamed the King Edward VII School in conjunction with the coronation of King Edward VII, successor to Queen Victoria.

The school was in need of new grounds, and serendipitously, so did the Taiping Railway Station. In 1905, the King Edward School was relocated to the site of the first railway station in the Malay States (Taiping-Port Weld 1885). Construction of the school building began in 1904, and the new building was inaugurated by the then Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris. The school had an enrolment of 434 students.

There is an ornamental gate with the name of the School inscribed on it which was put up in 1908 by the Public Works Department (PWD). This gateway can still be seen today. The large shade trees which line the school were planted in 1910, by a Mr. P. Moss, and the surviving trees are more than a century old now.

The school excelled in sports, namely cricket, athletics, gymnastics, and cricket. In 1919, the Cadet Corps was introduced, and in 1922 the first Scout troupe, “Second Taiping”, was formed. Rugby was introduced to the School in 1923, and in its first foray into a tournament among Malay schools, emerged as champion, beating Penang Free School.

In the Second World War, school was out and the school came under Japanese military occupation.  It was used as the base for the garrison commander in Taiping.

After the surrender of the Japanese in Malaya, the school’s students resumed their education by being accommodated into St. George’s Institution in the afternoons from October 1, 1945. On 14 January 1946, King Edward VII School’s doors reopened to 1004 students, with the school operating in 4 buildings. Primary school classes were conducted in the building on Trump Road, elementary school classes in the Sheffield Hostel on Museum Road and the Old Boys Hostel on Station Road. Secondary school classes were housed in the main building across the street from the Taiping Rest House.

In 1951, besides having a science laboratory, there were also dedicated rooms for Geography, History, and Art.

In 1954, girls were welcomed to the first time to the school when Form 6 classes began.

In 1958, the school’s population grew to large, and the decision was made to separate primary and secondary school students. The primary school students were divided into two: Primary I, and Primary II, which were housed in the main building along Station Road. Secondary school students were placed in the Sheffield Hostel, the former Infant Department, and in new buildings erected along Trump Road (Jalan Muzium Hulu). This separation has remained to this day.

NCIA picks Taiping school

TAIPING: THE 131-year-old Sekolah Menengah King Edward VII here has been chosen as a key partner by the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) in its efforts to introduce applicable industrial-based skills to students. Announcing the addition of the boys’ school into NCIA’s Kelab Kerjaya Programme during the 47th Old Edwardians annual dinner here, NCIA chief executive officer Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak said Taiping would be seeing more growth in the near future as one of the key economic growth nodes in the Northern Corridor.

He said Taiping would be witnessing various economic developments that provide opportunities for the people here.

“And to continue to provide this (economic) momentum, the NCIA has agreed for the King Edward VII school to be one of our key partners in NCIA’s Kelab Kerjaya Programme.

“This will involve collaboration among the school, NCIA, training institutes and the private sector,” he told the New Straits Times in an interview here. Present at the interview were school principal Abd Aziz Samsuddin and Old Edwardians Association of Malaysia president Mohaideen A.K. Mohd Ishack.

Redza Rafiq, who is an old boy of the school, said the programme, to be implemented by the school’s Kelab Kerjaya, would initially focus on providing the students industrial skills on heritage tourism in line with Taiping’s tagline as a “Bandar Warisan”.

He said the programme would be a non-examination-based course through which students would be taught practical lessons related to heritage tourism.

“Discussions are under way with the Department of Skills Development as part of the process to certify the school as an Accredited Training Centre for the National Skills Development Programme.

“The move to make King Edward VII School as one of our key partners is in line with NCIA’s long-term goals to develop Taiping and Kamunting as one of the economic growth nodes in the Northern Corridor,” he said, adding that NCIA would later introduce skills in more technical areas through Kelab Kerjaya.
To ensure that the school was adequately prepared, Redza Rafiq said NCIA had started work to make improvements in a few areas at the school.

Meanwhile, Aziz said the heritage tourism syllabus would be taught to students in Forms Four and Five who had performed above average in their studies.

“Besides learning in the class, the students would also be undergoing practical training or on-site stints at various heritage sites in Taiping, such as the museum and zoo.”

The heritage tourism subject would be introduced starting next year, he added.

The Tigers spirit roars within Edwardians

By Tiger A. Kathiresan of NST, 18 Aug 2010

TO a 9-year-old boy, the monsoon drain running along the front of the school in Station Road, Taiping, was a challenge of immense proportions.

Since Standard One, I had wanted to leap across it, as the senior boys seemed to so do effortlessly. One day, in Standard Three, I did it. What an exhilarating experience. It is one of the many memories I have of school life. Another is sitting or playing around the partly raised enormous roots of the rain trees lining the field of King Edward VII Primary School. That's where I used to sit and eat the thosai my mother had rolled, with sugar or curry inside, and packed in a container. Then, gulping down some tap water, I would join my friends and run around chasing each other or do the sundry other things that kids do.

The trees, I later learnt, had been planted in 1910 by a gentleman named P. Moss. At that time, I didn't know that my school stood on the site of the first railway station in the country.

King Edward VII School began as the Central School -- because it was centrally located in the mining district -- in 1883. It started with 13 pupils of various ages under the headship of J.L. Greene. Later, as the school population grew, it moved to the present primary school site -- the former railway station. Construction started in 1904 and the new school was opened on Jan 19, 1906, by the then sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Mursyidul Azam Syah.

The headmaster, R.F. Stainer, had suggested that the school be renamed King Edward VII, in honour of King Edward VII who had succeeded to the throne of England in 1901. Stainer, who was headmaster from 1900 to 1922, laid the foundation for what became the KEVII tradition. He coined the school motto Magni Nominis Umbra (Under the shadow of the great).

KEVII was renowned for its rugby prowess and it owes the introduction of the game, in 1923, to teacher T.J. Thomas. King Edward's team trounced Penang Free School in the first inter-school rugby game in Malaya in 1933. It had been national schools' champ numerous times. Rugby and KEVII were synonymous. There have since been moments of misplaced sense of nationalism. One principal, for instance, feeling the name King Edward was rather unpatriotic and the motto Magni Nominis Umbra un-Malaysian, decided to change both. The Old Tigers roared so loudly that he was transferred out.

A school is not, it is often said, just brick and mortar. Nothing was truer of KEVII, especially the secondary school. When I went to Form One, Long Heng Hua was the principal. If Stainer was the main architect of KEVII's early years, Long was his counterpart in the later years, serving from 1964 to 1982. He was the quintessential school head of earlier years -- smart, knowledgeable, neat, firm, dedicated, disciplined, caring and a good manager. Discipline was important to him, as was effort.

The words "Pak Long" were magic. They were enough to send us scuttling to our chairs or pretend to be immersed in our books; vacuous looks gave way to faces frozen in rapt attention. Nobody messed with him. That is why, perhaps, I won admiration when I threw a pail of water on him in 1972, when I was in Upper Six. It was Teachers Day and my classmates and I were splashing water on each other. Someone dared me to throw water on Long.

Carried away by the excitement of the moment, I ran with a pail of water towards Long who was then walking to his office. With a "Sir", I splashed him. That's when the magnitude of my folly dawned on me. But he just smiled and walked into his room. He took it with a sporting spirit. That was Long. He was not interested in just academic success or sporting success. We had plenty of both. He was interested in building character. He believed very much in what is known among Edwardians as the Tiger Spirit. He not only lived it, he infused his charges with the spirit -- to take on any challenge with gusto and camaraderie.

Most of my teachers were gems. They didn't just teach, they inspired. I owe my interest in journalism to two of them: Raja Mahtra Raja Kamaralzaman and Leow Kam Fong. They taught me English and English Literature in Forms Four to Six. The principal and teachers, the students and the ever present difficult-to-define Tiger Spirit, a gutsy companionship of sorts, all helped give KEVII an unmistakable charm.

One of the principals, R.P.S. Walker once said: "King Edward's should teach a pupil self discipline, duty to himself, his family and country, and hard work, for it is not the school in your life that matters but the life in your school". To him, "the teacher is the school and the school the teacher". That describes KEVII.

Today, the drain in front of my school no longer looks intimidating. But when I leapt across it those many years ago, I gained confidence. And KEVII helped me make a lovely leap into life. And life remains exhilarating. The Tiger Spirit still roars within me.
