Penang Free School students who drive to school have found that it's not free when it comes to parking there. The school's Parent-Teacher Association has been collecting parking fees since 2007 and this has not gone down well with some parents. A disgruntled parent complain that his son was being charged RM 50.00 in parking fee for for the school year. Chen the association imposed a RM 50.00 parking fee in 2008, the reason given was that "students who can afford to drive to school will be able to afford the parking fee".
The PFS Principal, Ramli Din confirmed that a parking fee was being charged. "The decision was made by the association, so I can't comment", he said. Old Frees Association Chairman, Datuk Dr. Ong Hean Tee said it was probably a way for the association to raise funds. He although support the school in its fund-raising efforts, the association needs to be careful when going about raising funds. He believed that the association would have thought it out carefully before imposing the parking fee.
