Menara ITM Shah Alam

Perpustakaan Hanya Ada Koleksi Penulis Bawah 18 Tahun
This library in San Francisco only has books authored by under-18 year olds
The Star – 12 Dec 2024
In
San Francisco, a unique library has recently opened its doors. Here, there are
no classics or bestsellers by established writers, but stories written by
children from all over the world. This unique space showcases young authors'
unbridled creative efforts, offering them a privileged place on the shelves.
For
years, American author Dave Eggers, best known for his novel A
Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius, had written works piling up
in his garage and no idea what to do with them. These were not copies of his
own novels and essays, but rather works written by young people aged 6 to 18,
coming from San Francisco and beyond. Convinced of these works' value, he
decided to give them a proper home.
And
thus, on Dec 4, he inaugurated the International Library of Youth Writing, a
library set up at the headquarters of his publishing house McSweeney's, on
Valencia Street in San Francisco.
"It's, as far as we know, the only one of its kind: a library that consists only of books written by young people,” Eggers told the San Francisco Standard.

DR Congo strives to reconcile young people with books
DR Congo strives to reconcile young people with books
The Star - 10 Dec 2024
The printer in the corner of Martin Lukongo's print shop in Goma, a city in DR Congo's troubled east, vibrates as it churns out an order for 400 copies of a book. For more than 30 years, this part of the vast central African country has been known for the conflict that now surrounds the city, rather than for any literary output. Some consider reading a luxury, even a futile activity, especially in a nation ranked as one of the world's poorest. But a collective of artists and activists has set out to encourage young people to develop a love of books by overcoming the hurdles to produce them locally.
"Writers prefer to print in Europe, as they think they can't obtain this quality here," Lukongo said. A photographer by trade, he manages to overcome power cuts and a shortage of high-quality paper by obtaining it from neighbouring countries to print around 60 copies - including books, novels and essays - a day.

Taking little leaps towards literacy

Tanjung Bungah’s The Literary
Frog houses over 3,000 books
GEORGE
TOWN: Tucked inside a cosy restaurant in Tanjung Bungah here is The Literary
Frog, a free community library founded by American expatriate Amanda
Goodrich. This book lovers’ spot boasts over 3,000 donated titles, spanning
various genres.
“Anyone can borrow a book. All they need to do is write their name on the book card, take it home and return it once they are done with it,” said Goodrich. This honour system has proven to be effective, as borrowers have been remarkably honest, ensuring the library remains a thriving hub for book lovers. My vision for The Literary Frog is one rooted in simplicity and trust.”

Gene Ang and Hawaiian Crackers of Taiping
Gene Ang and his Hawaiian Crackers: Taiping’s musical legends of the ’50s
Free Malaysia Today – 17 Nov 2024
Now 96, the former guitarist relives the glory days of his band that brought the small Perak town to life.
In the late
1950s, Taiping was a quiet town. But one band emerged amidst the humdrum,
bringing Hawaiian melodies and rock ‘n’ roll to life. Gene
Ang and his Hawaiian Crackers were an unlikely ensemble of postmen, bank
tellers, storekeepers and government workers, each driven by a shared love for
music.
By the time they played their last gig in 1976, Ang and his bandmates
had become local legends. Today, 96-year-old Ang lives in an old folks’ home,
where he fondly recounted stories of his past to FMT Lifestyle. Beside him sat
his granddaughter-in-law, Karen Loh, who first brought his story to light
through the “Museum Volunteers JMM” blog.
Born in 1929 to a Baba family in Ipoh, he was named Ang Leong Tooi, although he later adopted the name “Gene” after Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy. Ang’s love for music began early – at age five, to be precise. It started with the violin, which he learnt from a local Ronggeng troupe of Javanese dancers. Later, he picked up additional skills from his father’s friend, a Chinese opera musician.
